'Speaking English Successfully' is a comprehensive course designed to give second language speakers the skill of impacting the marketplace through the use of effective communication strategy. The programme focuses on the fundamentals of speaking English and introduces ideas about dealing with conflict and assertiveness in conversations. An exploration of attitudes, non-verbal communication and its effect on conversation also form an important part of the course.

Unit 1: Communication Fundamentals
Successful conversation begins with an understanding of the communication process and the fundamentals of non-verbal communication.

  • Understanding communication
  • Body language, your image and understanding the signals sent by others
  • What body language can do for you
  • Barriers to communication
  • Assignment 1: Analysis of video clips

Unit 2: Forms of Communication
Reaching the listener is the first step toward effective communication.

  • Profiling the listener/audience: understanding needs, perceptions and biases
  • Appealing to the listener/audience: how to make an impact
  • Active Listening: Reflective and Interpretive
  • Conversational structures: speaking the customer's language
  • Using the telephone
  • Assignment 2: Case study analysis

Unit 3: Improving Communication
Understanding the functions of the speech organs and the correct use of parts of speech allows for improved conversation. Using plain English allows you to reach the listener.

  • Elements of voice (Pitch, Volume, Pace and Quality)
  • Elements of speech (Pronunciation, Emphasis, Stress, Standard English, and non-words)
  • Using plain English and knowing when to use Jargon
  • Essential English Vocabulary and Grammar
  • Common errors: Use of tense and the Rule of Concord
  • Assignment 3: Evaluating public speakers

Unit 4: Using Communication Effectively
Strategies to make the message well-received.

  • Design and structure of the core message
  • Presentation techniques
  • Dealing with nervousness
  • Audience analysis and using the correct language
  • Assignment 4: Workplace related presentation

Unit 5: Managing Communication
Managing relationships is an important dimension of good communication.

  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Understanding 'Emotional Intelligence' and how it relates to conflict in the workplace
  • Assignment 5: Role play evaluation
  • Managing conflict: understanding your natural response
  • Managing customers and colleagues: assessing personality profiles and individual needs
  • Strategies to improve working relationships and increase productivity
  • Assignment 6: Analysing conflict situations in the workplace

Accreditation

Ingwe Corporate Training is an accredited provider with the Services SETA (SETQAA Decision number 1994). 'Speaking English Successfully' is a SETA accredited course and is aligned to the unit standard 119462 'Engage in sustained oral/signed communication and evaluate spoken/signed texts' NQF level 4, 5 credits. Learners are able to complete the summative assessment at the end of the course and earn NQF credits.
